Good to know

All batteries are considered hazardous waste in California and cannot go in the trash. HHW facilities accept household, rechargeable and vehicle batteries.

Tape the terminals of lithium and 9-volt batteries before transport to prevent fires.

Retailers that sell vehicle batteries in California are generally required to accept used ones.

Other ways

• Retail take-back. Many hardware, electronics and auto parts stores accept household or vehicle batteries.
