Where to dispose of concrete

Broken concrete, slabs and footings from demolition or remodeling. 15 places accept it in Southern California.

Good to know

Clean concrete (no dirt, trash or large amounts of rebar) is usually the easiest and cheapest to get rid of because it can be crushed and reused as road base.

Facilities typically charge by weight or by load. Mixed loads that combine concrete with trash, wood or dirt are often charged at a higher rate.

Rebar and wire mesh are accepted at many sites but some limit the amount or size of pieces. Ask before you load.

Asphalt is commonly accepted at the same sites that take concrete and is often recycled into new pavement.

Keep asphalt separate from concrete and dirt when possible; clean, sorted loads are usually charged less.

Brick and block are normally handled as inert material alongside concrete.

Whole, reusable bricks and pavers can often be given away or sold rather than dumped.

Other ways

• Dumpster rental. For a full patio or driveway demolition, a concrete-only roll-off dumpster can be cheaper than multiple truck trips.
• Construction recyclers. Some private aggregate recyclers take clean concrete for free or for a small fee, since they resell the crushed material.
• Paving contractors. If a contractor is replacing the driveway, hauling the old asphalt is usually part of the job.
• Reuse. Salvage yards and online marketplaces regularly take clean, whole brick and pavers.
