Good to know
California runs a statewide mattress recycling program funded by a fee paid at purchase. Because of it, many landfills, transfer stations and collection sites accept residential mattresses at no charge.
Mattresses that are wet, heavily soiled or infested may be refused for recycling and charged as regular trash.
Many cities also offer bulky-item pickup for mattresses through the regular trash hauler.
Other ways
- Bulky-item pickup. Most California trash haulers offer a few free bulky-item pickups per year; call the number on your bill.
- Retailer haul-away. Mattress retailers often haul away the old one when delivering a new one.
Don't bother
These do not take mattresses: Palm Springs Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, Anaheim Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, Irvine Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center.
