Where to dispose of motor oil & antifreeze

Used motor oil and oil filters from do-it-yourself oil changes. 3 places accept it in Southern California.

Good to know

California certifies thousands of used-oil collection centers, including many auto parts stores, which accept uncontaminated used motor oil from the public at no charge.

Household hazardous waste facilities also accept used oil, and are the right place for oil that has been contaminated with water, antifreeze or other fluids.

Transport oil in a sealed, leak-proof container; most centers limit the amount accepted per visit.

Antifreeze is toxic and is accepted at household hazardous waste facilities. Many used-oil collection centers also take it, but not all.

Keep antifreeze separate from used oil; mixed fluids may be refused at oil-only centers.

• Auto parts stores. Most chain auto parts stores in California are certified used-oil collection centers.
